£35m programme to build on Leeds City of Culture bid
A £35m six-year programme has been unveiled to build on the Leeds 2023 European Capital of Culture bid.The project aims to create a strong and meaningful legacy across the whole city, which will retain a strong international focus celebrating the city’s diverse communities.Leeds City Council will work with partners including Arts Council England and the private sector, to build a £35m fund for the programme, showcasing Leeds to the world.Projects to be brought forward as part of the programme include a new collaborative sculpture project ‘Yorkshire Sculpture International’, the launch of the Leeds Peoples Theatre and the Leeds Lighthouse.In November 2017 the European Commission ruled that, as a result of the Brexit vote, UK cities will no longer be considered for the European Capital of Culture title.
